For thousands of years, chestnuts were a staple food in rural areas, especially during times of famine. They were eaten fresh, dried, or ground into flour to make bread — a delicacy for soldiers. With the arrival of maize and potatoes, chestnuts lost prominence but remained an important part of the diet in many mountainous regions to this day.
