I remember it from the book "Amber Forever'. All the ladies went there to buy fancy stuff. :)

The institution, however, is actually much older than that. The Royal Exchange was founded in 1565 by Sir Thomas Gresham and was once the pre-eminent institution within the trading district of the City of London. It was the first purpose-built center for trading stocks in London.
