Sopron remained on the right side of history, intensely devoted to its Hungarian heritage. On August 19, 1989, it held a Pan-European picnic to oppose the Communist dictatorship and assisted 600 East Germans in escaping to the West. The protest was just one of several causes that contributed to the fall of the Berlin Wall a few months later. This brings us to the third statue in the Fountain of Faith.
