Isn't it weird that we find operating smartphones easier than this? 😄

You would pick up the receiver, and the voice of the switchboard operator at the telephone exchange would speak to you asking what number you wanted. You’d give the number and the operator would manually connect you to that number. You could then hear the number ringing at the other end until the recipient of the call answered the telephone.
