Often there is more than one chestnut inside the sweet chestnut like the one above. The casing isn’t as thick as in the horse chestnut. It also has much thinner, needle-like spines, which are more densely arranged compared to the horse chestnut. Being able to tell them apart is vital if you don’t want to suffer the unpleasant symptoms of toxicity.
