In these countries, once they have been outed, if they can’t escape across a safe border, they lose their jobs, no one will buy their products or services, and landlords feel required to chase them away even without the requisite evidence of behavior. They become targets of blackmail, extortion, and vigilantes. They get rejected from medical care if they are brave enough to seek it. They are told that they are not valued by the written and unspoken rules of their society and then that mirror of cultural loathing threatens to turn inward towards each other and themselves.
